Capital
Belmopan
The capital of Belize since 1970, after Hurricane Hattie destroyed the former capital, Belize City.
Belize is a small country packed with ancient Maya ruins, the world's second-largest coral reef, and the legendary Great Blue Hole. Let's explore it together.
The Great Blue Hole
A perfectly circular sinkhole — 318m wide and 124m deep
22,966
km² of paradise
Where is Belize?
Tucked on the northeastern coast of Central America, Belize is bordered by Mexico to the north, Guatemala to the west and south, and the Caribbean Sea to the east. Once known as British Honduras, it became independent in 1981 — and it's the only country in Central America where English is the official language.
The C.A.P.I.M. Method
C.A.P.I.M. is a memory trick teachers use to help students remember the essentials of any country — Capital, America, Points of Interest, Information, Money.
Capital
The capital of Belize since 1970, after Hurricane Hattie destroyed the former capital, Belize City.
America
Belize sits on the northeastern coast of Central America, between Mexico and Guatemala, facing the Caribbean Sea.
Points & Plates
Explore Caracol and Xunantunich — and don't leave without trying Rice and Beans with stewed chicken, the national dish.
Information
The only country in Central America with English as its official language — a legacy of British colonial rule.
Money
Pegged 2:1 to the US Dollar. 1 USD = 2 BZD. US dollars are accepted almost everywhere.
Geography & Nature
Despite its small size, Belize is one of the most ecologically diverse countries in Central America — a true meeting point of jungle, river and sea.
Relief
Running through the south of the country, this low mountain range is home to ancient Maya cities like Caracol and Victoria Peak, the highest point in Belize at 1,120m.
Coast
The second-largest coral reef system in the world, stretching 300 km along the coast. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and a paradise for divers.
Home to over 500 species of fish, 100 kinds of coral, manatees, sea turtles and the famous Great Blue Hole — a diver's dream.
The world's first jaguar sanctuary, protecting these elusive big cats along with pumas, tapirs and over 300 bird species in 128,000 acres of rainforest.
The longest river in the country (290 km), historically the main route for Maya traders and British loggers — still the highway of the interior today.
Climate
Belize has a subtropical climate with temperatures around 25–32°C year-round. The dry season (December to April) is the most popular for tourists, while the green season (May to November) brings brief afternoon showers and lush vegetation.
Travel & Costs
Belize is more accessible than you might think. Here's what to expect when flying from Brazil and how to budget once you're there.
Flight time
From São Paulo or Brasília, expect one or two layovers (typically in Miami, Panama City or Houston). Total travel time is around 15 hours door-to-door.
Round-trip ticket
Prices vary by season. The dry season (Dec–Apr) is most expensive; the green season (Jun–Aug) often has the best deals, sometimes under R$ 4.000.
Daily budget
Around R$ 450 to R$ 750 a day covers a comfortable guesthouse, three meals, local transport and one guided activity. Budget travellers can manage on less.
Tip: pack light cotton clothes, reef-safe sunscreen, and an underwater camera — you won't want to miss the reef.
